Whatever Happened To May D.
The Year Is 2012. I Just Went To Visit My Best Friend, And He’s Telling Me About This New Video That’s Banging, That He’s Been Seeing On TV. He Told Me The Guy’s Name Is May D And The Song In Question “Ile Ijo.”
I Was Surprised It Was This Boy That Was Telling Me About A New Hot Kid On The Block. Because Usually, I Was The One Who Did The Introduction. But Then, Later, I Discovered Why. He Was Obsessed With May D, And So Was Everyone. That Was The Time “Ile Ijo” Was One Of The Hottest Songs, And May D, The Most Promising Act.
May D Shot To Stardom After He Joined P-Square‘s Square Records In 2011, And Dropped The Track “Soundtrack.” He Later Dropped “Ile Ijo,” And The Video Which Had Popular Dancer And Guinness World Record Holder, Kaffy, In It.
P-Square Then Put Him On The Remix Of Their “Chop My Money,” Alongside American Singer, Akon. His Verse Was Epic, And Then Everyone Wanted Him On Their Songs. Davido, Sina Rambo, Show Dem Camp, DJ Xclusive, Iyanya And More Featured Him. And Yeah, Everyone Knew This Was The Next-Rated.
He Got A “Best New Act” Nomination At The Nigeria Entertainment Awards In 2012. But, In 2012, He Exited Square Records, There Was A Fall-Out With The P-Square Guys. He Moved On And Started His Own Imprint, And Nothing Was The Same. Everything Almost Crumbled.
For What It’s Worth, The Poor Guy Still Had Hits Like “Gat Me High” And “So Many Tinz,” Though. He Even Dropped An Album In 2013. Everyone Thought The Industry May Have Just Given Him A Second Shot. He Got A “Best New Musician” Nomination At The 2013 City People Awards. But, That Wasn’t The May D Everyone Thought Would Take Over The Industry, Again.
Year After Year, He Tries To Get Back To The Big Scene. In 2014, He Scored A Hit With “Ibadi,” Which Went Viral For The Dance Video. He Also Featured Wizkid On “Bamilo,” That Same Year. It Wasn’t Enough. In 2016, He Featured Akon And Davido On A Single Called “Hustle.” Despite The Big Names On The Track, It Wasn’t A Hit, And At That Point, It Seemed The Industry Had Given Up On Him.
Until 2020, When He Went Viral On Twitter Again. This Time It Was Because Of His Side Of The Story, On How The P Square Brothers Treated Him While He Was Signed To Them. The Story Wasn’t Just Awful, It Was Unbelievable — But It Seemed Real. Every One Pitied The Guy And Davido Hurried And Signed Him To His Imprint, DMW.
Okay, What Has Happened Since Then? Well, He’s Had One Song, “Lowo Lowo” Featuring Davido. What Else? Nothing. Not An EP, Not A Bunch Of Singles, Not An Album. Starting To Look Like May D Just Won’t Work Out Anymore. He Is Forgotten History, And Nothing Can Revive His Once-Promising Career.
Now, Who Will May D Run To? The May D, Durella Once Ran To, To Stay Hot? The May D Everyone Thought Was The Next African Superstar. Another Day, Another Story Of A Very Talented Guy That Faded Too Quickly. Today, We Remember May D. To Be Honest, The Guy Came With Sauce Back Then. But The Rest, As They Say, Is History.
