BE HONEST!! Would You Submit Your Phone’s IMEI Number To The Federal Government?

Nigerians To Start Submitting Their Phone’s IMEI number By July — NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says Nigerians will have to submit the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of their phones to it from July, 2021.

NCC stated this in their Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration. It says the new policy will allow the government to be able to identify every phone in use in Nigeria, and is approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

A portion of the policy said, “Accordingly, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has directed that the Device Management System should be implemented within three months.

With the aim to curtail the counterfeit mobile phone market, discourage mobile phone theft, enhance National Security, protect consumer interest, increase revenue generation for the government, reduce the rate of kidnapping, mitigate the use of stolen phones for crime, and facilitate blocking or tracing of stolen mobile phones and other smart devices, one of the means to achieve this is through the deployment of Device Management System.

The implementation of a Centralised Equipment Identity Register otherwise known as Device Management System will serve as a repository for keeping records of all registered mobile phones’ International Mobile Equipment Identity and owners of such devices.

IMEIs that have been reported as either stolen or illegal will be shared through the DMS to all the operators and service providers.”

MY OPINION:
I don’t have much to say than few reasons why you must not submit your IMEI number even at gun point.

What Is IMEI Number?

IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity and you can think of it as your device’s 15-digit social security number. An IMEI number is assigned to any phone operating on a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) network.

Why You Must Not Release It?

As a techy and to the best of my knowledge, when you lost your phone you can trace, block or erase the phone data by using your phone imei number. You must keep it secret because anyone who knows your imei number have thr chance to block your phone without your permission.

LISTEN UP!

The best thing you can do is to keep it secret. IMEI is a unique number that identifies your mobile phone (the device itself) in a wireless network. Anyone with it can use it for tracking your phone and also find out details about your phone’s brand, model, capabilities.

Despite its importance, IMEIs of phones can actually be overwritten by hackers to avoid smuggled phones recognition. This is the reason you should keep it secret. I’m trying to say, your phone can be cloned with your IMEI.

Can you trust Nigerian government with such information? If yes, then go ahead and release it to NCC. Thank you!
