Chief Abia Onyike, a former commissioner in Ebonyi state and an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Onyike announced his decision in a statement on Thursday, December 3, in Abakaliki, the state capital, saying he dumped the ruling party in line with unfolding political events in Ebonyi following the defection of Governor Dave Umahi.

Giving more reasons for his defection, the former APC chieftain said he returned back to the PDP because Governor “Umahi is not prepared to turn a new leaf in his leadership style in the governance of Ebonyi state.”

While calling on the opposition party to rescue the people of Ebonyi state, Onyike said he would always call out the government of Governor Umahi, The Punch reports.

Onyike also slammed the governor for allegedly running the state without permanent secretaries, adding that he (Umahi) is toeing a dangerous path with his forms of government. He said:

“That Gov. David Umahi is not prepared to turn a new leaf in his leadership style in the governance of Ebonyi state -a situation that has unleashed mass poverty and mass impoverishment on Ebonyi citizenry.
“I will remain opposed to Umahi’s government because of his approach to governance and administration. Take note that from 2015 to 2019, Governor Umahi ran the state without Permanent Secretaries.”
He also accused the governor of impoverishing the state by failing the people through his continuous support and “singular empowerment for a political block.”
